Introduction to the Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system is one of the body’s main systems for maintaining health and balance. This system helps to regulate mood, sleep, pain, inflammation, stress response, and metabolism in our bodies. Some of the endocannabinoid receptors are in our skin, others are in our digestive system, and more are in our nervous system.

By stimulating our endocannabinoid receptors, CBD and other cannabinoids can help to support our homeostasis. They may also help to reduce inflammation, anxiety, and pain, leading to an overall sense of well-being.

Homeostasis is vital for our overall health and well-being. When our bodies are in balance, we feel our best. But when things get out of balance, we may start to feel stressed, anxious, or in pain.

There are two main types of endocannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found mostly in the brain and central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune system and peripheral organs.

When CBD and other cannabinoids bind to our endocannabinoid receptors, they can help to support our body’s overall health and balance -- without causing the "high" commonly associated with smoking medical or recreational marijuana. This makes CBD an excellent alternative to medical marijuana, offering similar benefits without the intoxicating effects.

Our CB1 and CB2 receptors target different bodily functions; CB1 receptors target pain, mood, and memory while CB2 receptors target inflammation, the skin, the respiratory tract, the nervous system, the immune system, and more. CBD is believed to interact with both types of receptors, though it is more commonly associated with CB2 receptors.

Cannabinoids affect homeostasis in systems down to a sub-cellular level, and research suggests that they are involved in many different physiological processes that keep the body functioning optimally. While activities like working long hours, running, or lifting weights can stress our bodies and lead to inflammation, cannabinoids help promote homeostasis and keep us in balance.
